Sometimes we get busy. Sometimes that business affects the little habits in our lives, such as oral health care. Here are some things to consider as you get your dental routine back on track.

Brush: Of course, the first thing to address is how well you are brushing your teeth. The ADA recommends brushing for 2 minutes, twice a day. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and gentle pressure, as hard bristles or forceful brushing can damage both teeth and gums.

Floss: Floss once a day; this should take 2-3 minutes. It doesn’t matter if you brush first or floss first, as long as both get done. Floss around the complete tooth–including behind the back molars!

Eat Well: Our bodies depend on the fuel they get from us–don’t let your body down! This includes your mouth. Eat lots of calcium-filled, low-sugar foods, such as cheese and plain yogurt. Be careful with sugary and starchy foods. If you do choose to partake of these foods every once in awhile, be sure to brush and floss extra-well that day.

Chew Gum: After eating, especially acidic foods, your teeth are more sensitive to abrasion. Try to avoid brushing right after eating. Instead, chew a piece of sugar-free gum to stimulate saliva flow. Saliva is the mouth’s natural defense against cavities.

Visit Your Dentist: Of course, supporting your oral hygiene habits with regular dental visits is vital. Your dental visits will include a basic check-up for any problems in your mouth, including basic screening for oral cancer. Scheduling dental cleanings are also important for your smile.
